Mental Alarm Clock

Recommended Posts

Guest Ransome

Does anyone else seemingly have the ability to wake themselves up at specific times?

About a year ago, there was a movie I wanted to watch at 6:00am. I didn't have an alarm in my room at the time, so as I went to sleep the night before I simply told myself (in my mind) to wake up at 6am. The next morning, I woke up and looked at the time: 5:58am. Then, just last week, there was a film I wanted to see at 4:30am, but this time I *did* have an alarm clock, set for 4:15am. Yet still, I woke up and was consciously awake for at least 15 seconds before hearing the alarm ring. As far as I'm concerned, it's too specific to be just a coincedence.

It kind of makes me think of Kramer's mental alarm clock, how 'your body knows what time it is'. Does anyone else have examples of being able to do this?

I've woken up just before my alarm clock's about to go off plently of times. I can't make myself do it, though.

I guess I hit the snooze!

Yes to an extent. I basically work 8-430 every Sunday. Have every Sunday, with maybe 10 exceptions, since Walmart started opening at 8 on Sundays(december 2003. Same day Saddam was caught.)

And even on those Sundays off, I was up like, quarter after 8.

I have a mental snooze button. Sometimes, not even the alarm clock is going to wake me from my deep sleep.

I've had the occasion where I actually get out of bed minutes before my alarm goes off, but that's very rare.

Yeah, and it drives me crazy.

I used to work days, so I had to wake up at around 730a every morning to get ready for work. Now, I work nights and don't have to start work until 1p, and I usually don't get to sleep until around 330a. But, I'm still set to wake up at 730a every morning and am rarely able to get back to sleep, which means that on most days, I operate with <4 hours of sleep.

I have the ability.. It's cool.

When I was in high school, I'd wake up with my alarm.. say "I can aford to sleep until 8:25", fall back asleep and wake up at 8:25.

The only flaw I find with it, is that sometimes if I plan to wake up at an early time the next morning, I'll wake up a few times during the night with anxiety that I've slept too late.

I have been able to wake up @ 6:50 am every day for the last 5 years(for the large majority)

Not sure why 6:50. I don't need to get up for work til 7:30 and I start at 8:15.

Even if it's a sunday and even if I fall asleep at 4:30.

I think it has to do with your body knowing how long it's slept, as opposed to what time it is.

For example.. if you go to bed at 3, and want to be up for 7, your brain subconciously does a calculation that it can only shut down for 4 hours, and wakes you up after said time..

They should really devote tax dollars to scientific research on this! Why not, they do for everything else?

I have a strange ability where I always wake up some time during the 5 minutes before my alarm clock is going to go off and turn it off then fall asleep again and end up being late. I ended up moving the alarm clock way over to the other side of the room because even when I had it just out of reach of my bed and I had to get up to turn it off I'd still lay down and fall asleep again.

Yeah the same happend to me. It got to the point where I would pretty much sleep through the alarm clock next to me (i'd turn it off without any real knowledge or effort) so I had to start turning on the alarm clock on my phone and leaving it on the other side of the room so i'd actually have to get up, look for it and turn it off.

Depends on the situation that I need to wake up for. If it's work? Pfft, fuck no. I've overslept through work plenty of times (I need to get up at 5:15 AM to get to work for 6 every morning I'm working). Luckily I've been there for over 6 months, so I get something like 10 recorded absences (meaning no-call-no-shows) before I even get a verbal warning (only cool thing about Bob's). There's been maybe 2 for me so far, and they both happened in my first 2 months while getting used to the schedule.

But, say, if I'm taking a nap after work and am going out that night, I'll wake up about an hour before I'm supposed to go out, regardless of my alarm, so I can get ready.

Nope, unfortunatly for me if my alarm doesn't go off and someone doesn't wake me, I could sleep for days. I have to keep my alarm on the other side of the room to prevent me from just turning it off, the last time I did that I ended up sleeping untill almost 4 in the afternoon.

I can do it most mornings, but it's not reliable enough for me to shut off my alarm clock. Also, I have a high propensity to want to sleep until the last minute. But yeah, I can do it, and have been able to for a couple years. It's pretty cool.

I have an irratic mental alarm clock. I seem to wake up 1-2 hours before I have to, which screws me up bad because you just get back into deep sleep and then the alarm clock starts going off and you don't feel like you have slept enough.

My mom wakes up every morning without an alarm clock, but she also refuses to stay up late which helps.
