Movies that pleasantly surprised you

Recommended Posts

The first X-Men movie I went into, thinking, "I alright I know this going to suck but I'm not paying for this so it's not that bad" I was blown away when I walked out, not because it was a great movie (It was pretty good) but because, I was 110% sure it was going to suck ass and it didn't.

The only reason I went to Galaxy Quest is because the movie I went to see had sold out. So I came in with little expectations but the movie was actually a fun popcorn flick.

I rented Bubble Boy just to see how bad it was and I ended up laughing my ass off. It's not a great movie, but its one of my top guilty pleasures. It's such an entertaining clusterfuck.

I probably have more that I can't remember now. Any of you guys thought something was going to suck and you actually ended up liking it?

I'm one of what, based on reveiws / a thread here, about 10 people who found Dukes of Hazzard to be hilarious. My friend reccomended I see it but I told him many reviews in paper, forums, and by morning radio DJs were bad. He insisted it was funny with good car stunts with "good references for fans of the show". Having lost all memory save the important stuff (read: The General) of that show from my childhood and never watching it when I was older, I'm not sure what he meant (assuming the "Freeze for narration" scenes, which I liked). In fact I would thinkg being a fan of the show would be a reason to HATE the movie, since the movie seemed to be more Stiffler and Jackass Ride the General Lee.

I didn't see it when it first came out in 1990, but I thought there was no way Die Hard 2 was going to be that good. I hadn't read any reviews or heard anything about it ahead of time. It's not better than the first one, but it's still an awesome movie.

Jersey Girl was surprisingly entertaining, too.

The Matrix. I was loving the trailer, but then I saw Keanu and groaned in disgust. I assumed it to be another decent looking movie killed by that wooden fucker.

Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle - Very surprised at how much I liked this....but Doogie Howser steals there car, so what's not to love? :D

Nothing at all. It was stupid, but I cried I laughed so hard at some points.

Also, Kung Pow: Enter the Fist. Stupid, but I laughed my ass off for most of it.

Yep.

Pootie Tang, Deuce Bigalow, High School High and Shaun of the Dead.

I thought I would hate the Fantastic Four and it's been my favorite popcorn flick of the summer.

Oh yeah, I loved Pootie Tang. I saw it when it first premiered on HBO with low expectations and I was laughing my ass off the whole time.

I also don't think Battlefield Earth sucks, don't get me wrong I'm not a fan and the movie is idiotic and filled with gaping plotholes, but its no more idiotic than a lot of Hollywood blockbusters that have made lots of money. John Travolta looked like he was having the time of his life in that movie. Besides how can you hate an alien Forrest Whitaker?

Closer.

I can't stand Jude Law, Natalie Portman OR Julia Roberts, and I wasn't sold on Clive Owen yet. So there was no way I was going to see this movie.

The GF rented it one night, and I wasn't in a particularly bad mood or anything, so I just went along with it and it turned out to be really good. All of the disliked actors gained one point in my eyes, and it totally sold me on Clive Owen - that guy needs to be the next James Fn Bond.

"Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" surprised me. I thought that a Jerry Bruckheimer film based on a theme park ride would be crap but it was one the best films of that year.

I also thought "Scary Movie" was going to suck but I thought it was pretty funny when I watched it. The second film was shit though.

"She's All That" turned out to be pretty good too.

Spider-Man 2

I really didn't think they could do such a good job with it, and I thought I would be pissed at MJ/Peter being together, but it turned out to be really amazing.

Mean Girls, the Matrix and especially Lord of The Rings. When it came out my mom wanted to see it because she was a big fan of the books and she read when she was little so she dragged us to the cinema and we all LOVED it. After that I saw the same movie 3 times in the cinema again because it's so cool.

On the other side I expected Spiderman to be good and it SUCKS.

Cellular. Thought it was going to be crap, but really liked it, especially Chris Evans and William H. Macy.

3000 Miles to Graceland. I mean, don't get me wrong, its a dumbass movie, but the previews made it look like the movie was about the casino heist, then when it happend at the beginning of the movie, I knew it was going to go somewhere different. Coster killing Arquete, and slater and the rest of the film just was a mindless kickass shootemup to me. I really love that movie.

Plus, spinnin Ice-T rules you all.
