Ravenbomb 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2005 But will people who are not Joss Weldon fans like the movie? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> "not Joss Whedon fans" as in they just aren't familiar with his work, or as in they don't like his work? If it's the latter, then probably not.

The Ghost of bps21 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2005 I saw the second showing I attended with 3 people who hadn't seen the show...and a couple of them made fun of me for liking Buffy. They both bought the Firefly series after seeing the movie. The other was my best friends girlfriend...so she just watched his. She's a cunt.

If it's the latter, then probably not. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> As a "not Joss Whedon fan" (although his 'Astonishing X-Men' run has been decent) I'll just say that I wouldn't know whether I'll like it or not because I have no plans to see it. And no, you're not going to convince me to, either. However (and this is why I'm posting in the thread) I have to say that I'm impressed by the amount of promotion the movie has gotten over the past month. I still don't know if Universal really has faith in thet movie, but good on them for not half-assing the promotion.
edotherocket 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2005 Just saw it in Brisbane, Australia. Huge crowd was there for the screening. A bunch of dudes with Jayne hats, some 2x2 blue handed people and a girl wearing Kaylee's pink n' white dress were amongst the audience. I really enjoyed it. Both myself and my girlfriend were fans of the show and didn't come away disappointed. I have no idea if the show will be appealing to the casual viewer though. They do a bit of work at the start to explain it all (Simon's first line is virtually "hi, im simon, im the brother") but after that it seemed to be geared for the Firefly faithful. I look forward to the discussion once more people watch it.
Guest Biggles Report post Posted September 29, 2005 I've never watched an episode of the original tv show. It seemed like Fox yanked it so quickly...I was busy...blah...blah...excuses. But, I'm a huge Joss fan. Buffy is one of my all time favorite shows. I watched from day one. I enjoyed Angel as well as his recent writing gig on Astonishing X-Men. My question: I plan to go see Serenity opening weekend for three reasons: 1.) Because it looks like a good film. 2.) To support Joss, a great writer who should have more respect in Hollywood. 3.) To stick it to the Fox Network for cancelling another great show without even trying to find it an audience. Fox seems to just cancel things without even giving them a chance. Look at the success of Family Guy and Futurama on Cartoon Network. Now Serenity, a failed Fox show, is a major motion picture. They also cancelled a soap called Pasadena which critics now say had the potential to be Desperate Housewives. I probably already know the answer to this question, but will I get the movie without having seen any of the episodes? I'm sure the answer is yes, duh. But I wanted to hear it from you all. Ravenbomb 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2005 I actually kinda hope you DO have to watch the series to get the movie, cause that way they wouldn't be using up part of the movie for setup.

MDH257 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2005 I'm going to try and see it this week. I've been watching the reruns on the Sci-FI Channel and they'll have only shown 9 or 10 episodes by Friday. So that's all I've seen. They should have done a better job of knowing when to start the reruns to make sure they all aired before the movie came out. They started in late July, not sure why they didn't just begin a month or so earlier.
Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2005 They've shown them all in a handful of mini-marathons. I may go tomorrow afternoon if I get out of work soon enough. Man, this should be fun.
MDH257 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2005 They've shown them all in a handful of mini-marathons. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> That's news to me. The only marathon I was aware of was the one they had this past Tuesday, which was only of the ones they'd already shown. I know they show mini-marathons of shows on weekday mornings/aftrenoons, but I didn't think they had done one for Firefly.

bobobrazil1984 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2005 Ebert's review of Serenity. It's positive, 3 out of 4 stars. I should point out though that there are some middling spoilers there, possibly a bit more than your average review, down in the third to last paragraph (begins "Serenity" is made of dubious but energetic special..." ) so maybe you wanna skip by that one para if ya don't know. http://www.daily-chronicle.com/articles/20.../liveitup08.txt
Guest JMA Report post Posted September 29, 2005 I watched much of the Sci-Fi Channel's Firefly marathon (but not the last few episodes) so I feel that I'm reasonably "caught up" with the continuity. I just wish that I had watched more episodes of the show during its initial run.

El Psycho Diablo 0 Report post Posted September 30, 2005 I really, really hate the commercials for this. Not to mention the flash ads online "Millions of fans can't be wrong". (Yes, they can..) Even if I had interest for this, the commercials and ads would've killed it.
UseTheSledgehammerUh 0 Report post Posted September 30, 2005 Looks really, really bad. Reminds me of "Jason X" with cheesy crew look. I love how the commercials hype the "newspaper ads", when the ads only point out how the show was cancelled.
Guest croweater Report post Posted September 30, 2005 Well, I went and saw it yesterday, and really enjoyed it. I went with my friend who had never even heard of the series before and he liked it aswell. Probably the best scifi movie I've seen in ages. The good thing I found about this movie is that eventhough the script had to catch up the non fans of the show, it was in a way where new things were revealed at the same time to fans of the show so it really didn't apear as strictly "catch-up" bits. The story itself was really good and moved along nicely. Joss does have really good timing in his writting and direction and of course the continuity was great also. Overall I'd give it about 7/10. It's really fun.

What you'll miss is the depth of character that is gained in 14 episodes...and at most 2 moments that are payoffs to the show's fans. On it's own merits...it rocks the kasbah

Whereas most previews look bad because the movie is bad...the Serenity previews are bad because there is no way to sell this movie in a short spot. I've seen the movie...and these previews are bad...but I couldn't cut one together. I just know that I sat in a theater for 2 hours and was so entertained that I feel compelled to tell you to go as well. And I never do that.
Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted September 30, 2005 OMG AHHH GOOD SHIT LEAF ON THE WIND NOOOOOOO Oh man that was fucking great. Wow. Exceeded expectations by about 40 times over. I went to a 4 PM showing with a friend after I got off work, and the theater was 2/3 full in a town of maybe 50,000 people. Were they ever into it too. Did I mention LEAF ON THE WIND NOOOOOOOOOO AHHHH NOOOOOOOO Everything was great. Best sci-fi movie in forever. It succeeded in making me miss the show infinitely more than I ever did before too, but what a triumph for everyone involved.

Anya 0 Report post Posted September 30, 2005 I just got back. It was so great. Even better than the show. I wish Book was in it more but I understand why he wasn't, he would have had nothing to do. Kaylee and Wash barely had roles as it is. That many main characters just doesn't work in a movie. Wash's death was Anya's death in Chosen but done right. It makes me sad but at least it was done really well. The grave at the end really got to me. I just hope Joss finds a way to have him in the sequel for a scene or two.
