NFL Week 12

Recommended Posts

Dude, the NFL has this brand new invention called the Wild Card. As a matter of fact, 2 teams per conference get them into the playoffs. Even if the Chargers don't win the division they can get in unless they end up losing all 5 games.

This term gets thrown around a lot, but this call in the Chargers-Raiders game might have been the worst call in NFL history.

SD receiver gets up from catching a ball - untouched - and celebrates by throwing the ball on the ground.

Ref claims he was trying to throw the ball and rules it an illegal forward pass.

As a die hard Raider hater, that's a complete joke, and a season suspension of that refereering crew is really the only way the NFL can come off of this without looking like a total sham.

Odd, but correct, call brings confusion in S.D. game

SAN DIEGO -- A moment of celebration by San Diego receiver Vincent Jackson turned into 10 minutes of confusion in the fourth quarter of the Chargers game with the rival Oakland Raiders.

With the Chargers trailing 14-7 and facing fourth-and-2 from the Raiders 40, Jackson caught a 13-yard pass from Philip Rivers, rolled to the ground untouched, then stood up and spun the ball forward. Oakland's Fabian Washington jumped on the ball, believing it was a fumble, and setting off 10 minutes of confusion as the referees sorted it out.

Referee Mike Carey originally signaled Oakland's possession, but then the Chargers were flagged for illegal forward pass. Even with the 5-yard penalty for the illegal pass, the Chargers still had a first down, at the 32.

Four plays later, LaDainian Tomlinson threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Gates to tie the game at 14.

While the call was questioned on the field, NFL Supervisor of Officials Mike Pereira confirmed to ESPN's Chris Mortensen that the call was correct -- and not without precedent.

It is illegal to intentionally fumble a ball forward and, by rule, an illegal forward fumble is an incomplete pass. That makes it a dead ball. A 5-yard penalty is then assessed from the spot.

Jackson spinning the ball forward when he was not down by contact constituted an intentional illegal forward fumble and thus an illegal forward pass. Had he spun it backward, it would have been a live fumble.

A similar call was made when Plaxico Burress did the same thing with the Steelers on Oct. 1, 2000.

The Super Chargers nearly lost to the friggin' Raiders.

I'd say the Ravens are looking the best of everyone right now. As long as they can keep putting up points, they're fine.

The Broncos and Chiefs both beat the Raiders by 4 pts in recent weeks. LT beat them by 7. Advantage = SD

How can it be considered a "forward pass" if the WR is past the line of scrimmage?

And an illegal forward pass is five yards and a loss of down, if that play happened on fourth down, the ball should have gone to the Raiders. I know SD got a first down on the play, but the ball was never whistled dead, so it should have been ruled the same way you'd rule a RB breaking a 70 yard run on 3rd and 6, with a holding call at the end of the run. You don't give them the first down but then tack off the penalty yards, you take the penalty yards and replay the down.

What does being beyond the LOS have to do with anything? Any ball thrown forward is a "forward pass", regardless if it is behind or beyond the LOS.

There are 3 teams still in the hunt for the Wild card at 6-5 (Cincy/NY/Jax). Granted, I think Jacksonville doesnt have a shot, and Cincy will need to win Thursday to stay in the hunt, and the Jets are the Jets..

2 Games in and Jason Campbell has 4 TDs and 1 INT, with about 350 passing yards, against the Defenses of Tampa and Carolina, not bad. I am not going to over-do it, because he is young and I am sure the stumbling blocks are still going to take place, but I am happy to see that for the first time since Theismann, the Redskins might actually have a Franchise QB on their hands. :)

Its also entirely possible the Chargers dont even make the playoffs with the Chiefs and Broncos right at their heels..

The fuck are you kidding? The Broncos won't knock the Chargers out.

They're 3 games up on the 7th best team with 5 to play, or the same lead that the Ravens have over the Bengals for the division and a spot in the postseason. Unless LT and Rivers both go down, they're making the playoffs.

The Ravens can clinch their Division thursday with a win. The Chargers only have a 2 game lead on both Denver and KC and they already lost to KC once and they have to play both of them again.

Please. They get both of them at home. They lost to KC by a field goal and they beat Denver at Mile High. They're going to win both of those games, and they're going to end up 13-3 at worst, with the only other potential loss coming at Seattle.

In a number of cases, that's exactly what you do. Even in the one you mentioned, holding and illegal blocking upfield is marked off from the spot of the foul.

I was ready to turn the channel by the 4th quarter, but I kept it on the Titans game just to see what Vince Young could do....

I believe in Vince Young now. And may I just say how FUCKING DUMB that Kimonawanalaya guy is for half-tackling Vince, thinking he's just some regular schmo quarterback and will fall down if he's touched with one finger, and walk away from it... ON FOURTH AND GODDAMN 10! Vince got the yards, kept going, and the Titans end up winning the game. Kimikanawhateverhisnameis better get roasted in the papers more than Eli. I can't believe how dumb that was.

On a side note, TITANS WIN! TITANS WIN!

Vick might be having a far better game passing if his Wr's would catch passes instead of flat out dropping them. More drops than actual catches today for White, Jenkins, Lelie.

I am going to be honest here.

Vick has played 3 bad games this year. HIs numbers have been bad in more games than that.

Today the falcons dropped at least 5. Their season high was 10. In ONE FUCKING GAME.

For the people that say its because he throws the ball too hard....No. I am begging someone to actually watch a Falcons game this year and see how horrible it is. I think next week he is going to have to throw the ball under hand to the receivers and maybe they will only drop one or two.

Geez, Coughlin just threw Eli right under the bus at the postgame news conference.

The Giants are not making the playoffs. There's going to be an all-out revolt sometime before the end of the season. I wouldn't be surprised to see it by the end of the next week, especially if Dallas blows them out.

Well, Eli should lay down infront of the bus on his own.

When has home-field advantage ever helped the Colts? Baltimore could easily beat them in Indy with a power runner and a solid D. I think the Colts are at the point where they'll at least have to make it to the SB before anyone takes them seriously. How many years in a row have they pulled off the "We're awesome in the regular season, then bend over in the playoffs" routine?

I Remember the Ravens played the Colts in Indy..and got plastered in the 2nd half. Granted that was with Boller and all but..Id rather have whoever come to Baltimore instead of having to go wherever.

Addai having 4TDs nearly screwed up my fantasy team but Im only losing by 7 points..I had Fitzgerald/Taylor and I still have Hasselbeck tomorrow.

Denver is pissing me off with all their prime time games..maybe the Ravens/Chiefs will get SNF treatment in 2 weeks.

Possible week 14 Flex SNF games:

FOX: NYG@CAR, PHI@WSH

CBS: BAL@KC, IND@JAX, DEN@SD

You cant put Denver on again, Indy shouldnt get put on again against Jacksonville, Eagles/Skins is a dud game..

So its either Giants/Panthers or Ravens/Chiefs.

ELI-MANIA will be running wild on NBC SNF!

That's a strange game not to sell out in Buffalo. Considering it was like 60 and sunny there.

And now to see how I did on predictions:

Thanksgiving 12:30:

Miami (4-6) at Detroit (2-8): It's Thanksgiving tradition to suffer through a Lions game. The Dolphins are on a trademark Jobber Roll (as in a crappy team that gets on a streak that overall will mean nothing). I'll take Miami by 7. (A lot easier than this. 1 for 1)

4:15:

Tampa Bay (3-7) at Dallas (6-4): Cowboys look to have really improved and the notion of a short week letdown is silly considering the Bucs have the same short week. Dallas by 14. (Ended up Dallas by a lot. 2 for 2)

8:00:

Denver (7-3) at Kansas City (6-4): Can you feel the Broncos starting to tank a bit? I can. I'll take the Chiefs and home by 4, and the Cutler talk intensifies in Denver. (KC won it at home, 3 for 3)

Sunday 1:00:

Jacksonville (6-4) at Buffalo (4-6): Jacksonville has followed solid wins with baffling road losses this season, so expect that trend to continue. Bills aren't as bad as predicted. Buffalo in an ugly game 14-10. (Not so ugly, but the result was accurate. 4 for 4)

Houston (3-7) at NY Jets (5-5): The Jets are an up and down team but they should get a win at home here. Jets by 10. (Jets won this one easy enough. 5 for 5)

Pittsburgh (4-6) at Baltimore (8-2): Well, one Jobber Roll has to come to an end and that looks like the Steelers here. Ravens win it in close fashion 24-20. (Ended up a total rout for the Ravens. 6 for 6)

Cincinnati (5-5) at Cleveland (3-7): The Browns tend to play people tough only to lose it late, and I think something like that will happen here as well. Bengals by 6. (Another total squash here. 7 for 7)

Carolina (6-4) at Washington (3-7): Panthers have been back on track since the Cowboys squashed them. They should continue here with a road win over the Skins by about 10. (Skins stepped up here and got the slightly surprising win. 7 for 8)

Arizona (2-8) at Minnesota (4-6): The Vikings have been puzzling this year, but the Cardinals are wretched. Vikings will win this at home by 7. (Vikings stagger but hold on here. 8 for 9)

New Orleans (6-4) at Atlanta (5-5): The Saints are starting to tail off and the Falcons are in free fall. Can't help but think the Falcons will pay back the Saints from earlier. Atlanta by 4. (Falcons in total freefall. 8 for 10)

San Francisco (5-5) at St. Louis (4-6): Okay, this crap with the Niners is getting a bit out of hand, haha. Rams bring them back down to earth 31-17 since they need the win. (Not this bad but the Rams did manage to win it. 9 for 11)

4:00:

Oakland (2-8) at San Diego (8-2): Oh God, can you say total squash? Chargers by however much they want. I'll say 21. (Not really a squash at all, Raiders are doing better. 10 for 12)

Chicago (9-1) at New England (7-3): This should have been the NBC game of the week. I am honestly on the fence here, it depends on what Grossman does. I'll say the Bears win this by 7 but it wouldn't shock me if NE won. (Wasn't shocked that the Pats won here. 10 for 13)

NY Giants (6-4) at Tennessee (3-7): Giants are reeling right now and the Titans have improved. But the Giants pretty much have to win this, so I'll take them by 3. (Ouch, the Giants are in big trouble. 10 for 14)

8:15:

Philadelphia (5-5) at Indianapolis (9-1): Without McNabb everyone will predict a Colts squash, but the Colts can't squash much of anyone this year. Indy by 10. (Mostly a squash. 11 for 15)

The Super Chargers are winning the Super Bowl this year. They're the only team that seems to know how to/want to win even in adverse conditions.

I don't know... they're a fucking team that doesn't like to get going until the second half... it works most of the time in the regular season, but not so much in the playoffs.

Yeah, that shit was horrible to watch, especially the key White and Jenkins drops. I didn't see the Lelie one, so I cannot comment on that.

Guest Felonies!

Miami @ Detroit: Miami can't be stopped, which is funny. Dolphins by 6.

Or 17. Whatever. 1/1

Tampa Bay @ Dallas: Cowboys will get a decisive win here and the Booyah Network will not let us forget for ten days. Cowboys by 17.

Or 28. 2/2

America's Team at Kansas City: I don't buy that the Broncos are fading, but the Chiefs should get a win at Arrowhead. Hey, remember Chiefs-Broncos early this year? Was that game just the worst shit ever or what? Chiefs by 3

I was right about it being field goal-oriented again. 3/3

Jacksonville at Buffalo: Jaguars stay mediocre with a dumb loss to Buffalo. Bills by 10.

4/4

Houston at NY Jets: Jets stay mediocre with an easy win against Houston. Jets by 18.

5/5

Pittsburgh at Baltimore: They're gonna fuckin' kill the Steelers. Ravens by 21.

Damn. Off by 6. I had the right idea. 6/6

Cincinnati at Cleveland: Cincinnati's offense shows up big time for this one, barring arrests. Isn't it weird how Chad Johnson seems to be the most reviled Bengal, yet he doesn't seem to do anything really dumb or illegal? Hmm. Bengals by 17.

Right idea, but they scored even more. 7/7

Carolina at Washington: stevesmithstevesmithstevesmith Panthers by 13.

Glad to be wrong. 7/8

Arizona at Minnesota: This game will show the world who Denny Green's best team REALLY was! No jobber-roll for AZ, Vikes right the ship. Vikings by 9.

Or just 5. 8/9

New Orleans at Atlanta: It should be similar to their last game. I don't remember the score, so meh, Saints by 10.

Or 18, even. Vick is good. Falcons aren't. 9/10

San Francisco at St. Louis: Rams are through, 49ers are looking impressive. Is it Frank Gore or Mike Nolan's suit? Is it both? 49ers by 3.

No suit = 49ers loss. 9/11

Oakland at San Diego: Trap game close call, Chargers by 6.

Almost had this one. Wrong game. 10/12

NY Giants at Tennessee: The Giants won't lose this one, even if I'd love them to just for the look on Tom's face. Giants by 13.

Who knew? 10/13

Philadelphia at Indianapolis: Whatever, Colts by 35.

Just 24. 11/14.

I need a Packers win to beat cabbageboy, unless he picked Green Bay as well. Not that it had even been a competition or anything

EDIT: Redbaron pointed out my error, so I guess I got 11 right this week. That's not too shabby.

Oh, and how was the look on Coughlin's face?

Guys, guys! The Broncos are on next Sunday! I can't wait to see them!

Well, they'll have Cutler at QB, maybe he'll make the Broncos entertaining to watch again. Believe me, as a fan of Bama and the Broncos it hasn't been a good year as far as exciting games are concerned.
