the saddest song

Recommended Posts

What do you think is that saddest song? I'm gonna go with "Candle in the Wind '97" cause that lady was something.

OK really, let's hear 'em. My opinion: "So You Want To Be A Superhero?" by Carissa's Wierd is by god that saddest song ever. I'm almost getting choked up just thinking about it.

Now someone say Johnny Cash "Hurt" because I know someone will.

I don't know the name of the song, it's an old guitar instrumental from the 50s...best way I can describe is it's the song playing in "La Bamba" as they announce the musicians' deaths up through the end of the movie.

Leonard Cohen - "Chelsea Hotel No. 2"

Leonard Cohen - "One Of Us Cannot Be Wrong"

It doesn't make you weep so much as it makes you want to crawl into a dark corner of the room and die. Great song, though—who doesn't love a whistling solo?

Eric Clapton - Tears in Heaven

There couldn't possibly be a sadder song than that. When you hear this song played at the funeral of a loved one, it is the worst feeling in the world.

I'd also like to add "Casimir Pulaski Day" by Sufjan Stevens. It's always sad to think about kids with cancer, and this song is just gloriously heartwrenching.

"Mad World" off the Donnie Darko soundtrack

That's more of a early morning or late night driving on a empty highway after a long day to reflect about things song. Hardly the "saddest" song.

I'll echo the Cohen "One Of Us Can't Be Wrong" selection but I did hear a Bright Eyes song the other day that was quite sad entitled "No Lies, Just Love", though it is hardly the saddest song out there but just the most recent sad song that is playing through my head at the present moment.

I suppose on its own its not "the saddest song" but I was thinking of it more in conjunction with the movie.

This was a topic on Opie and Anthony a while back and "Mad World" was mentioned..as well as a bunch of other songs I cant remember right now..

Is that the same song that was on those Gears of War commercials?

I'd add most Red House Painters' songs to the list. Mark Kozelek is a sad, sad man.

Also, "You Were Wrong" by Built to Spill is a sad song, but still asskicking in its awesome gee-tar power.
