Boon Posted January 20, 2007 Report Posted January 20, 2007 I don't remember ever doing a topic on this. After seeing the Scrubs musical, it got me thinking about some of my favorite "gimmick" episodes of other shows. Episodes that had a special kick to them, like the Scrubs musical, the backwards Seinfeld episode, etc. Anybody else have a favorite special episode?
Boner Kawanger Posted January 20, 2007 Report Posted January 20, 2007 A few weeks ago, My Name is Earl had an episode where the entire concept was that the whole cast had been on an episode of COPS that was filmed in their hometown. So, barring the intro and very end, the whole show was COPS with characters from MNIE. And it was one of the single funniest episodes I've seen of a show. Of course, I have to mention NewsRadio in Space/NewsRadio as Titanic. And I really like that one episode of Chappelle's Show where Dave shows all of the skits that had been filmed but were "misses". The Time Haters were awesome because, as Dave says, "They travel through time..and hate on people."
The Amazing Rando Posted January 20, 2007 Report Posted January 20, 2007 I always enjoyed when the ABC TGIF shows went to Disney World, if they count.
Craig Th Posted January 20, 2007 Report Posted January 20, 2007 The Seinfeld one where they did everythng backwards.
Guest Smues Posted January 20, 2007 Report Posted January 20, 2007 Duckman's 'Hamlet 2 - This time it's personal'
Ravenbomb Posted January 20, 2007 Report Posted January 20, 2007 "Hush" from Buffy the Vampire Slayer I kinda dug the MST3K ep where the MADs and Joel and the 'Bots switched places
Spaceman Spiff Posted January 20, 2007 Report Posted January 20, 2007 Mattdotcom hit the NewsRadio episodes, so I'll throw in The X-Files' homage to Hitchcock's Rope (with some Wizard of Oz thrown in) "Triangle".
treble Posted January 21, 2007 Report Posted January 21, 2007 I must be the only one who didn't like the Cops episode of Earl. Does the 'S.O.Bs' episode of Arrested Development count? I know it was mostly mocking gimmick episodes (3D, the 'live ending'), but it was still good.
The Amazing Rando Posted January 21, 2007 Report Posted January 21, 2007 Drew Carey's "What's Wrong With This Episode" Episodes... not that I *loved* them, but they worked for a gimmick.
Boon Posted January 21, 2007 Author Report Posted January 21, 2007 Ah yes, I forgot Drew Carey's April Fools episodes- those were entertaining at least. Not really a gimmick episode, but I also liked House's "Three Stories."
Mecha Mummy Posted January 21, 2007 Report Posted January 21, 2007 The episode of Scrubs that was done like an incredibly generic 80s sitcom. That was fantastic, especially the Janitor coming in, getting that "wacky side character the audience loves" response from the studio audience, and mugging and posing for the camera.
Ed Wood Caulfield Posted January 21, 2007 Report Posted January 21, 2007 "Hush" from Buffy the Vampire Slayer I kinda dug the MST3K ep where the MADs and Joel and the 'Bots switched places That was Mike & The Bots.
Special K Posted January 21, 2007 Report Posted January 21, 2007 I can recite the entire Buffy musical. Yes I'm pathetic. It did get me laid once, though.
Red Baron Posted January 21, 2007 Report Posted January 21, 2007 Does Christmas episodes count, because all of South Park christmas episodes are awesome, and also the episode "Re-Run"
Ravenbomb Posted January 21, 2007 Report Posted January 21, 2007 "Hush" from Buffy the Vampire Slayer I kinda dug the MST3K ep where the MADs and Joel and the 'Bots switched places That was Mike & The Bots. Was it? Hm. I thought that was pre-Mike
Sideburnious Posted January 21, 2007 Report Posted January 21, 2007 The X-files episode X-Cops. Pretty much an episode of Cops that gets involved with the duo on a case. Probably my favourite "entertaining" X-Files episode off memory.
MillenniumMan831 Posted January 21, 2007 Report Posted January 21, 2007 I don't remember much about them, but I thought Drew Carey and Roc going live was an interesting concept. I do remember on the ol TGIF, Urkel's backpack rocket launcher took him into space at the end of a Family Matters episode only to land in the Lambert family backyard on Step by Step.
UseTheSledgehammerUh Posted January 21, 2007 Report Posted January 21, 2007 Drew Carey Show and the "spot things wrong in each scene" episode.
Papacita Posted January 22, 2007 Report Posted January 22, 2007 How about that one Simpsons where every the characters had their own little story (like Lisa getting the gum in her hair)? I always liked that one.
The Amazing Rando Posted January 22, 2007 Report Posted January 22, 2007 22 Short Films About Springfield? Yeah, I could count that as a gimmick.
Matt Young Posted January 22, 2007 Report Posted January 22, 2007 I really liked the Cops episode of The X-Files.
Jonathon Posted January 22, 2007 Report Posted January 22, 2007 I liked when Law and Order and Homicide: Life On The Street would cross over. It makes me wish 24 and The Shield would cross paths at some point.
Hank Kingsley Posted January 22, 2007 Report Posted January 22, 2007 The episode of Scrubs that was done like an incredibly generic 80s sitcom. That was fantastic, especially the Janitor coming in, getting that "wacky side character the audience loves" response from the studio audience, and mugging and posing for the camera. My favorite. Plus, I get goosebumps when the patient so abruptly flatlines during J.D.'s narration.
MarvinisaLunatic Posted January 22, 2007 Report Posted January 22, 2007 I liked when Law and Order and Homicide: Life On The Street would cross over. It makes me wish 24 and The Shield would cross paths at some point. As long as Vic is about 10 years older lol..
The Man in Blak Posted January 22, 2007 Report Posted January 22, 2007 Not really a gimmick episode, but I also liked House's "Three Stories." Not that "Three Stories" isn't great, but you could have always cited "No Reason" (the second season finale), if you wanted to throw in a House episode. Great end to the season and a bit of a turnaround for the series, which was starting to lose its touch.
Jericholic82 Posted January 22, 2007 Report Posted January 22, 2007 How about that one Simpsons where every the characters had their own little story (like Lisa getting the gum in her hair)? I always liked that one. yea me too. I always liked the TGIF crossovers too, another good one was when on sabrina, Salem ate a timeball (after it had been used to transport back to the 60s by sabrina) then on Boy meets world they were back in time too. (i mean the same characters but they acted like they were back then)
starvenger Posted January 22, 2007 Report Posted January 22, 2007 I liked when Law and Order and Homicide: Life On The Street would cross over. It makes me wish 24 and The Shield would cross paths at some point. John Munch is a gimmick as it is at this point - he's been on seven different TV series spanning 14 years. My personal favourite are the Mirror Universe episodes on Star Trek. Oddly enough though, I'm not too high on the original episode, but I love the DS9 and Enterprise ones...
NoCalMike Posted January 22, 2007 Report Posted January 22, 2007 All of the Simpsons Halloween Episodes. Roseanne always seemed to have cool halloween episodes, too. If it counts, Married With Children, Sam Kinison episode(Christmas).
Boon Posted January 22, 2007 Author Report Posted January 22, 2007 All of the Simpsons Halloween Episodes. I think I really only liked the first five or six of those, and then they just sort of ran out of ideas.
