Best Promos Ever

Just doing an opposite of the Worst Promo thread and wondering who you think gave some of the best promos? We already know the obvious ones - Flair, The Rock, Dusty, etc... who are some that don't get their just due?

 

I know some people hold him in high regard, but I'll have to throw Michael Hayes out there. He was the walking definition of someone who could talk people into an area, and the box office numbers he generated are the proof. Even though it was as if he was riding on the high end of a bender most of the time, he still had far more charisma and talent on the microphone than a lot of others.

I always felt that Taker was always hugely underrated on the mic during the badass/big evil run.

I wasn't really around in Steamboat's era, and I don't know if he's regarded as a big promo guy or not, but I saw a couple of backstage interviews of his on old, re-run WCW and he seemed the only genuine one there - he was the guy who sounded like he was just saying things on his mind and really believed it, instead of the bluster and antics of the others.

One of my favorite Flair promos was one he cut back in early 2002, where he was nearly in tears begging and pleading with Vince to not bring the nWo to the WWF. Shows how good of a promo Flair is.

 

In the late 90's, you rarely got anything short of excellent from a Rock or Austin promo.

Shane Douglas was really hit or miss, but when he was on, he was fucking on.

Double A is considered a great promo by a lot of workers.

 

I agree with the Shane Douglas comment, although I think even when he misses he's still decent. Same with his ring work the last few years.

 

I have a obscure promo reference, and it probably wouldn't be considered a good promo by a lot of people even myself because it goes on a little too long. But Dan Maff cut a very intense promo on Low Ki for their Bitter Friends, Stiffer Enemies match. The intensity was great at the end, however the promo was a retread of an old WWF Eddie Guerrero promo about his daughter having the poster of another wrestler on his wall.

 

Scott Steiner's "retirement" speech was pretty heartfelt.

Speaking of ROH, for the most part I always thought Colt Cabana only did good promos when there was someone reacting to his goofiness. But when the feud with Homicide began, Cabana started cutting some damn good promos. The one he cut at the beginning of Unscripted II was some great stuff.

Some of my favorite "non-obvious" promos, off the top of my head:

 

Brian Pillman. Easily.

 

Taz during his ECW badass run.

 

Eddie Gilbert every time he touched a microphone.

 

Bret Hart (especially during his heel run in 1997).

 

Chris Candido was always awesome.

 

The Dudley Boyz faction from 97-99. Some of the only true heel heat I've seen in ECW.

 

Raven, of course... I'm cutting myself off... but there are many more...

On the WWF SummerSlam 1993 hype show a week before the pay-per-view Jim Cornette cuts an awesome promo for Yokozuna after Yokozuna defeats Hacksaw Jim Duggan. The basic premise of the promo is that Luger has awakened the monster that is Yokozuna and is going to die in the ring and when he looks at Cornette or Fuji to end the beating they won't be able to help him "because its gone too far." Awesome promo by Cornette that would've made me lay down some $$$ for the show if I'd have seen it back in 1993.

 

Cornette also cut a pretty good promo after Yokozuna got by Luger at WrestleMania X and was getting ready to face Bret Hart now that I think about it.

I thought his stuff against Zandig in the ROH/CZW stuff relied way too heavily on the "CZW guys are fags!" stuff.

Mick Foley's barbie promo prior to his match with Orton at Backlash 04 (??). Foley's delivery was simply chilling, from the words he used, to how he said them, and all the while, calmly rocking back and forth in that chair. It was the first and only time that a promo alone took my interest from zero to a PPV buy. I simply had to see what this madman would do in the ring.

If it was on Bitter Friends, Stiffer Enemies, then it wasn't even old at that point since the Guerrero promo in question was a promo he cut in like July or August 2002 against The Rock. And speaking of which, that's definitely a wonderful non-obvious promo to mention, that entire segment with Eddie and Rock was absolute gold.

Ole Anderson's promo rejecting his partner Thunderbolt Patterson for his nephew Arn..."I look at my nephew and see everything an Anderson should be. Today is a free day...tomorrow watch your back!" I got goosebumps from this promo...no screaming, no ranting and raving...just telling it like it was.

 

Jerry Lawler was good on the mic...personal fave of mine was the one before his match with Andy Kauffman talking about how he took the business seriously and how people like Kauffman made it a joke.

 

One of my personal faves came from Sid Justice aka Vicious before wrestling Hogan at WM 8..."There's two types of bees...there's the bees that make honey. And THEN THERE'S YOU FATSO! THERE'S THE USED-TO-BE!" Calling Hulk Hogan "fatso"...priceless.

Dusty Rhodes. You knew it was coming. One of my favorite Rhodes promo's was actually in TNA during his feud with Brian Lawler/David Flair/Erik Watts. Lawler was cutting an AWFUL promo against Dusty from the ramp while Dusty was in the ring, and said "You know, Dusty Rhodes, you're not just an OLD man...you're an old FAT man!"

 

To which the Amayeruhcane Dweem replied "Oh Lordy, oh no, you called me fat!" Dusty no-selling, and then verbally burying Brian Lawler, was amazing.

Randy Savage's promos weren't always gold, but for some reason I always find myself, in complete Savage voice, quoting his line against Warrior during their fued in 92: "Because I'm the World Wresting Federation champion....AND YOU'RE NOT!"
