It's not as if the Phillies have this wonderful pitching staff either. I have a feeling both the East and Central will become battles of attrition by August.

But it was the pitching that led to the Mets collapse last season. And when you look at the pitching now -- and see that the only changes made were Santana (great change though, obviously) and Matt Wise (ugh) -- it's a foreboding sign. Agreed on the notion that the whole NL East isn't exactly a boon for great pitching, but I'm essentially just as uneasy about the Mets staff this year as I was last.

Maybe it's a good thing I only saw have of the game today and by saw, I mean kept tabs on via MLB Gameday. It's too early to overreact, though. The Tigers are 0-2, pegged to win the wild card, if not the AL Central, and they're playing the Royals.

while driving around for work I listened a good portion of the game on the radio and Rogers had the Royals in control for most of the game but something happened (which I missed) and the Tigers fell apart late in the game. I had to chuckle a little bit given the Tigers sexy pick status and the Royals being, well, the Royals, but definitely too early to hit the Cartman button

D'Backs @ Reds: Arizona has the bases loaded with one out, and the pitcher on third. Ground ball to Edwin Encarnacion, and he wisely throws home. However, he misses by an estimated 8 feet. No shit. Second throwing error on the short season for Edwin.

The Phillies got one hit, and failed even to get a runner to second base. As pathetic an offensive performance as they've mustered the last ten years.

 

0-2. That's not bad on its own merits. The problem is that the Phillies have started 1-6 three of the last four years. It's disgusting.

I may like having Eckstein on the team after all. Apparently he has the power to will balls out of opponents' gloves just by his sheer grittiness and hustleocity. Guy makes the turn around third on a looper to shallow left -- worst baserunning decision ever -- ball comes to the plate, he's out by twenty feet...and Posada drops it.

Os bright spot - Bullpen has thrown 7 2/3 innings and given up 2 hits, no walks and no runs.

 

Too bad the starters have given up 15 hits and 12 runs in 9 1/3 ip.

 

aubrey Huff! 2 Run Double! YEAH! Os lead 7-6.

 

I think Huff has earned back some of the fans respect with his 2B,HR and 4 RBI night.

Yes, I ran through the emotions on him this game. The throwing error from earlier and then missing the bunt twice in a row had me wanting him benched until he could work on his mental issues. What I laughed about was the one announcer on my feed all but yelling that Encarnacion was not a clutch player, and should be benched immediately. The other guy was trying to bring up his average with runner's in scoring position last year, which was great, and Edwin smokes a three run walk off homer. The announcer that was taking up for him: "Was THAT clutch?"

Ahhh, Ankiel hits a homer and makes an awesome catch, Pujols gets on base 5 times, and Todd friggin' Wellenmeyer actually pitches pretty well. Hooray baseball!

If the offense can act more like tonite (4 HRs at Petco) and less like the last two games and the pitching following Roy Oswalt can be more like Backe's game last night than Wandy's game tonight, the Astros might be able to do something. I mean, they are in the worst division in baseball, so there's always hope unless you're the Pirates.

Cubs pitching managed to plunk Rickie Weeks and Prince Fielder for a total of 4 times in the first two games of the year.

 

I know there was some shitty pitching to blame, but you have to think Milwaukee is going to retaliate at some point.

I get the feeling the A's are going to be losing a lot of 1-0, 2-0, 2-1 type games this season. Their pitching could be something to contend with but the lineup is just so green. When Chavez finally gets back and if he decides to stop underachieving the middle of the lineup might be ok, but the rest are just so green, I feel like I am watching a mix of the Rivercats and Ports dressed up in A's gear.

Here's an interesting note that sort of went under the radar yesterday. Kevin Youkilis set the major league record for consecutive games without an error by a 1B. The streak is 194 games and counting.

I remember back a couple years ago I was not very high on Youks at all. I was wrong..very wrong. He goes through some stretches where he K's a bit more than normal but other than thet he's just solid in every aspect for a First Baseman.

Cueto's turned in a phenomenal first start for the Reds so far. 7 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 10 K.

 

If he lives up to expectations, the front end of the Reds' rotation suddenly looks really, really good.

I was one of the 10 people in the stands to watch Cueto pitch today, just absolutly great. He was throwing 97 all day, perfect control, a great change up, just dominating. On the way home I heard Orlando Hudson interviewed, he said Cueto has the best stuff he's ever faced, better than Peavy.

A little frustrating, since the Jays probably could have swept that series with a few bounces here or there, but I love what I'm seeing from the pitchers so far. I just hope the hitting can come around, because it's seeming too much like last year so far for my liking.

That was a well pitched series. Toronto's top three is as good as anyone's. I'm glad that Hughes got it going tonight.
