Some Notes Regarding Playoff Races.

 

AFC EAST:

 

-- Harley, Buffalo beat you one already so the Bills will clinch the division over you. However, you did sweep the Jets this season. You also beat KC. Problem is your 5-7 conference record doesn’t look promising, especially since Jacksonville’s conference record is better than yours.

 

-- Gert, you split the season series with Buffalo. If you lose and Buffalo wins you lose on division record. New England swept you and you already lost to KC. Jacksonville has a better conference record than you. Ideally, you need to win and for Buffalo to beat New England; otherwise, you will need some help to get in the playoffs.

 

-- Bob, a win and a Jets loss gets you the division.

 

AFC NORTH:

 

-- KingPK, win and you’re in. Lose and you’ll need KC and the Jets to lose.

 

AFC SOUTH:

 

-- Always Pissed Off, Houston swept you so the division is clinched. You beat Buffalo, and if you beat Baltimore, it looks like you’ll be in the playoffs because your conference record will be better than the Jets'. It looks like you and KC will have to go to another level of tie-breakers. I’ll wait to cross that bridge if needed.

 

AFC WEST:

 

-- BX, You beat the Jets. You look like a “win and you’re in” case.

 

 

NFC EAST:

 

-- Human, you and Dallas split the season series. However, you have the better divisional record. You beat Seattle and have a better conference record than Carolina.

 

-- Hawk, Human Fly has you beat on divisional record. You lost to Seattle and San Francisco – The 49ers taking the division will help with what little playoff chance you have. You need Fazzle to lose. You know what, just cheer for San Francisco to beat Washington, Seattle to lose and Carolina to lose.

 

NFC NORTH:

 

NFC SOUTH:

 

-- Fazzle, you didn’t play any of the 8-7 NFC teams this year. San Francisco and Washington have better conference records. Seattle has the same conference record as you. Dallas has a worse conference record. Cheer for San Francisco to win. If the 49ers clinch the division, Washington will lose. That looks like it would put you in the postseason.

 

NFC WEST:

 

-- Devo, if you lose and Seattle wins, you lose the division based on Seattle with the better divisional record (you two split the season series). If you lose, Human Fly beats you out for a wild card spot. You would still have a better conference record than Carolina and Dallas. Still not putting the equal sign by you, though.

 

-- UZI, You lost to Washington in Week 12. You beat Dallas in Week 13. As of right now, you and Carolina have identical conference records.

NFL Tiebreaking Procedures

 

The six postseason participants from each conference are seeded as follows:

 

1. The division champion with the best record.

2. The division champion with the second-best record.

3. The division champion with the third-best record.

4. The division champion with the fourth-best record.

5. The Wild Card club with the best record.

6. The Wild Card club with the second-best record.

 

The following procedures will be used to break standings ties for postseason playoffs and to determine regular-season schedules.

 

NOTE: Tie games count as one-half win and one-half loss for both clubs.

TO BREAK A TIE WITHIN A DIVISION

 

If, at the end of the regular season, two or more clubs in the same division finish with identical won-lost-tied percentages, the following steps will be taken until a champion is determined.

Two Clubs

 

1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games between the clubs).

2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division.

3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games.

4. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.

2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.

When the first Wild-Card team has been identified, the procedure is repeated to name the second Wild-Card, i.e., eliminate all but the highest-ranked club in each division prior to proceeding to step 2. In situations where three or more teams from the same division are involved in the procedure, the original seeding of the teams remains the same for subsequent applications of the tie breaker if the top-ranked team in that division qualifies for a Wild-Card berth.
