Best Album Closers

Recommended Posts

I can't remember ever seeing a "closers" thread, so I figured I'd start one for shits and giggles. Anyway, what are your favourite album closers? Mine:

"Chonkyfire"- OutKast

"Indifference"- Pearl Jam

"Jugband Blues"- Pink Floyd

"Would?"- Alice In Chains

"Diary of a Madman"- Ozzy

i think i'll be different and do a "disappointing closers to really good albums" edition:

massive attack - mezzanine, "(release)"

rolling stones - let it bleed, "you can't always get what you want"

talking heads - remain in light, "the overload"

wu-tang clan - 36 chambers, "7th chamber part II"

Elvis Costello and the Attractions - (What's So Funny About) Peace, Love and Understanding?

TV On the Radio - Mr. Grieves

Pavement - Fillmore Jive

Tom Waits - Anywhere I Lay My Head

This always bugs me. The album is so ridiculously good, and...they end it on a pastiche of all the tracks before it? It falls flat in the context of the album. On it's own, it's a nice Wu-Tang sampler, but it's a tremendous anti-climax after you've just run through the ridiculous pile of hits that is that album's second half.

exactly. you get hit this loooong string of powerful, near-flawless shit from "da mystery of chessboxin" all the way down, then THAT song comes up and it's like "...huh? this is IT?"

if i still can't sleep after this sam phillips album i'm gonna see how it works if i just stop after "tearz."

I've tried that before. It's better, and I love that song, but my ideal finish would drop "7th Chamber Part II" and flip "Tearz" with "Protect Ya Neck." After all, even as it stands now, the album already ends with RZA's "ya best protect ya neck, best protect ya neck" fade-out. Something as frenetic and wild as "Protect Ya Neck" sums up the album for me and would make a perfect finale.

Speaking of which, how big was that song back when this album first came out? I dropped it on a mix disc for a party on a whim, and there had to be 10 or 12 college kids absolutely into it, pretty much word for word on some of the verses.

Definitely agree with "Train in Vain."

Pixies -- "Havalina"

You know, a guilty pleasure of mine is actually the Pixies ending Trompe Le Monde with "The Navajo Know" (probably misspelled that, eh.) It's really sort of mostly just a non-distinct song for the Pixies that I didn't enjoy at first, but after a while it sort of stuck to me.

Modest Mouse's middle-two albums end wonderfully.

"The Trial," while not actually the last song on The Wall, is an excellent finale of sorts.

Let's see... Eskimo ends well... Marquee Moon... Horses... White Light/White Heat... The Velvet Underground... Piper at the Gates of Dawn...

The list really goes on and on, but I'd say that my ultimate choice as of right now (since I just got tickets for them yesterday and am in the mood) would have to be the end all of end all ending tracks.

Slint -- "Good Morning Captain"

Iced Earth have made a habit of always having the best song on the album be the last track.

Something that ties directly into their love of Iron Maiden.

Speaking of which my pick would be HALLOWED BE THY NAME or RIME OF THE ANICENT MARINER.

If you count the trilogy as one song (not that the eliminator jr part is bad) I definitely agree.

Thinking about Sonic Youth, the last song on Sonic Nurse, Peace Attack is one of the weakest tracks of the album if taken individually, but makes a really nice coda.

Equus is a very nice sendoff to Blonde Redhead's Misery is a Butterfly

I know it's obvious, but 'Equator' originally finished Kimono My House and it's one of sparks' greatest songs. As is 'Suburban Homeboy' off Lil' Beethoven. I agree with 'That Feel' and 'Havalina'. 'Gouge Away' has to get a mention if they do, though. '22 going on 23' is a good'un, also.
