What is the greatest martial arts fight in cinema history?

Recommended Posts

Ong-Bak all the way.

I think my favourite fight in the movie is the one against the afro guy who dances a lot. I just thought it was really neat how they showed Jaa figure him out. Like, for a while buddy was able to throw the kicks, but eventually Jaa figured him out enough that every time one of his feet left the ground for a kick, Jaa's foot was already there, blocking it. Also, when Jaa starts throwing fists, and you can practically see him thinking "If I throw a punch like this, he dodges that way; a punch like that, he dodges this way. So if I throw two punches then kick in this general area, that's where his head is going to be." I love that.

Though I think the single best move in the movie is when he does the flying knee to the head of the guy on the bike.

^HAMMER FIGHT

Although not really fights, the training scenes in 'The Fearless Hyena' are awesome. I really like the chopsticks battle, where Jackie Chan's trying to eat a dumpling.

I think the fight scenes in 'Equilibrium' are fucking terrible, except the one close-quarters pistol fight.

The final battle in Drunken Master II/Legend of Drunken Master always has a special part in my heart.

And here's another person agreeing that the fight scenes in Ong Bak are absolute must-sees for the movie fight aficionado.

Here's a martial arts comp VIDEO if anyone is bored.

The backlfip into a low flat-back dropkick is insane-looking

This is going to put me in the minority here, but I've seen both Equilibrium and Ong-Bak in the last three months, and I have to say, both films are VERY overrated by message boarders.

That's not to say those two films aren't good, because they are, or that they aren't fun, because again, they both are. But I wouldn't describe either film's fights as the greatest of all time.

I like Tony Jaa, but I honestly believe that when his career is all over and done with, you'll look back at Ong-Bak and say, "That shit wasn't anywhere near as good as the stuff he did later on." Jaa has the potential to be huge, he could be the next Jet Li or Jackie Chan if he wants to.

Also, best part of Ong-Bak, for me, was when Jaa took a dive in that one fight, and did an awesome Mr. Perfect oversell of the guy's offense.

The equilibrium fight scenes aren't great for the -fighting- but the style and choreography. I think it's very intricate in its' own way, that's why I like them.

Any fight scene from Crippled Masters.

I watched this movie with a head full of mushrooms once, not knowing what it was. Fucked me up..

The guy with a nobby arm spinning that staff. Holy shit.

I can't believe there's no Bruce Lee love here. I nominate anything from Enter The Dragon or The Chinese Connection. Although all his movies have terrific stuff.

Don't get me wrong here, I love Bruce Lee and all...but some of his stuff probably didn't aged well stylistically. I still loved his intensity especially in 'The Chinese Connection' (the dojo fight). Fist of Legend & Drunken Master 2 had some of my fav fight scenes as well.

Loved Tony Jaa in 'Ong Bak' too...but I think he did better in 'Tum Yoong Gung'. He still does his 'knee in midair' spot...plus his fight scene vs the capoerista is breathtaking. All this and NATHAN JONES is badass in this one. Being in South East Asia, I was able to get this movie early...you guys may have to wait a while, though :P

Someone mentioned Sammo Hung. There's a recent Hong Kong release titled 'SPL' said to have great fight scenes of him vs. Donnie Yen (Blade 2, Hero, Iron Monkey). I'm looking forward to watch this one in a matter of days and will provide my comments afterwards.

I watched it again tonight. Cripples + Kung Fu would equal ratings.

Oh come on, the Final Battle in the Five Deadly Venoms. One of the few fights that manages to be surreal without being camp or too serious.

Gordon Liu vs. Pai Mei (all three times in Fist of the White Lotus.)

The scroll writing fight in The Magnificent Butcher as well anything with the drunk embarressing people. Creative stuff. Funny Sammo isn't in none of the movies best fights.

Boyz N The Hood, when doughboy fights his brother.

Most realistic fight you will see, Ricky goes for the shot, Doughboy sprawl, crossface, pancake into a knee on belly, then delivers some sick GnP that even Steve Mazzagatti would step in to prevent.

Sadly, Batman vs Guy Gardner was not a movie fight, nor was it martial arts. But it did show that, indeed, Batman was the one, true badass in the DCU.

Ahem. Oh yes, Martial Arts. I'm partial to the pole fight in Iron Monkey, but I'd concede that it's not the greatest fight ever. Greatest fight might just be the climatic fight in Drunken Master II, as has been mentioned.

Bruce Lee vs. Chuck Norris from Return of the Dragon, also just about every fight in Hero, and the drum game in House of Flying Daggers(if you want to call it a fight, it's certainly uses sleeve-fu)

For everyone that's on Tony Jaa's dick for Ong-Bak you need to step your foreign film game up and see his latest.

Every fight is better than anything in Ong-Bak and he fights Nathan Jones twice, the last time Jones has two more guys with him that are the same size as him or larger.

I'll give you guys a quick

of one of the final fight scenes where Tony takes on like 50 cats, easily besting them all but not before breaking SOMETHING on each of them. It's insane.

Saw Tom Yum Goong last night, the final fight scenes with Jaa vs a few dozen guys and Jaa vs the Huge Mofos are great.

None of them have anything that could be considered the best fight scene, but Sonny Chiba is the biggest pimp ever in the Street Fighter movies. He drips more machismo and sweat than Rick Rude and Scott Hall put together. Plus he rips off a man's Charlie Browns 30 years before Sin City
