Just John Posted September 30, 2006 Report Posted September 30, 2006 Tonight's SD episode inspired me to inquire about this. What are some examples of announcers shamelessly protecting kayfabe? Besides Jimmy Yang never having a match on SD...
MillenniumMan831 Posted September 30, 2006 Report Posted September 30, 2006 Probably not exactly what you're looking for, but Monsoon calling every jobber a youngster . . . regardless of how long they've been around or how old they look.
10 Pounds Posted September 30, 2006 Report Posted September 30, 2006 They did the "newcomer" thing for Harley Race, even though he was a multi-time champion. Everytime the crowd is silent "because they're in shock". Crowd being half and half at Wrestlemania 18. The kids are loving the Gobbledy Gooker. When your hear wrestlers calling spots, but they're really "talking trash" to each other.
tominator89 Posted September 30, 2006 Report Posted September 30, 2006 When a spot is blown, it's a high risk manuever.
Just John Posted September 30, 2006 Author Report Posted September 30, 2006 On the jobber note, I just can't take it seriously when an announcer shills a newcomer for going over a "veteran" like Val Venis or Scotty 2 Hotty.
JHawk Posted October 1, 2006 Report Posted October 1, 2006 John Cena being "controversial" rather than "not over with anybody but women and children".
MrRant Posted October 1, 2006 Report Posted October 1, 2006 When a spot is blown, it's a high risk manuever. Well it's just them usually using it in regards to missing. They aren't just going to say "RVD fucked up".
PLAGIARISM! Posted October 1, 2006 Report Posted October 1, 2006 'Ah don't know if he got all of it..'
Papacita Posted October 1, 2006 Report Posted October 1, 2006 I remember once during a Kane/Snitsky match, Lawler said something like "these fans are really loving this match" while in the background you can CLEARLY see the crowd doing the wave. I thought that was pretty funny.
Hasbeen1 Posted October 1, 2006 Report Posted October 1, 2006 Announcers acting like they didn't know who Steamboat was during his run in the WWF in the early 90s, just a few years after being the IC champion, stealing the show with Savage at WM III. Hundreds of other examples, just anytime an announcer "forgets" something.
Guest dlb19338 Posted October 4, 2006 Report Posted October 4, 2006 The WWE claiming they moved WM7 indoors to the LA Sports Arena to "protect" Sgt. Slaughter from anti-Iraq threats when in reality they couldn't sell out the Coliseum.
Masked Man of Mystery Posted October 4, 2006 Report Posted October 4, 2006 I remember when Matt Morgan came back with the stuttering gimmick, and they acted like he had never been in WWE before, despite being in a WRESTLEMANIA match
ChrisMWaters Posted October 4, 2006 Report Posted October 4, 2006 I remember when Matt Morgan came back with the stuttering gimmick, and they acted like he had never been in WWE before, despite being in a WRESTLEMANIA match ... Matt Morgan was never in a WrestleMania match.
Masked Man of Mystery Posted October 4, 2006 Report Posted October 4, 2006 I remember when Matt Morgan came back with the stuttering gimmick, and they acted like he had never been in WWE before, despite being in a WRESTLEMANIA match ... Matt Morgan was never in a WrestleMania match. My bad....I could've sworn he was in the Taker handicap match at 19. At the very least he was there, on Smackdown no less....and he was in Survivor Series, sorry.
TheFranchise Posted October 4, 2006 Report Posted October 4, 2006 I'd gathered you meant that match. Show and A Train.
Dobbs 3K Posted October 5, 2006 Report Posted October 5, 2006 Similar to calling jobbers "youngsters", when Carlos Colon appeared at the Royal Rumble one year Gorilla Monsoon called him a "youngster" even though he was well over 40. I also remember laughing my ass off at an early episode of Monday Night Raw when Rob Bartlett asked Vince McMahon "Who's this guy wrestling Shawn Michaels? Some guy they dragged off the street?" and Vince had to stammer and say something like "He's a young man who's enjoyed a bit of success here in the WWF," or something like that, referring to a jobber HBK was squashing.
ChrisMWaters Posted October 5, 2006 Report Posted October 5, 2006 Similar to calling jobbers "youngsters", when Carlos Colon appeared at the Royal Rumble one year Gorilla Monsoon called him a "youngster" even though he was well over 40. To be fair, this was Monsoon saying this in the early 90s. At that point, Moses was a youngster to him. [Ok, an exagguration...but you know what I mean.]
Just John Posted October 5, 2006 Author Report Posted October 5, 2006 On the lines of young wrestlers, I was watching a show from 2000, and JR called Benoit and Jericho "youngsters with bright futures ahead of them." Never mind they had each been wrestling for 10 years or more by then.
BruiserKC Posted October 6, 2006 Report Posted October 6, 2006 Announcers acting like they didn't know who Steamboat was during his run in the WWF in the early 90s, just a few years after being the IC champion, stealing the show with Savage at WM III. Hundreds of other examples, just anytime an announcer "forgets" something. Along those lines...announcers from previous organizations that have amnesia when they came to the WWF/E. A prime example...Rod Trongard in the late '80s (former AWA announcer) saying on an episode of Prime Time Wrestling, "I have never seen the Rockers".
CanadianChick Posted October 6, 2006 Report Posted October 6, 2006 On the lines of young wrestlers, I was watching a show from 2000, and JR called Benoit and Jericho "youngsters with bright futures ahead of them." Never mind they had each been wrestling for 10 years or more by then. Jericho, I can forgive. Sure, he had been wrestling for a while at that point, but he has an extremely young looking face for his age. Benoit though? Dude doesn't even look young.
MillenniumMan831 Posted October 6, 2006 Report Posted October 6, 2006 They did both go on to win World Championships so the bright futures part wasn't entirely inaccurate.
Dobbs 3K Posted October 6, 2006 Report Posted October 6, 2006 Anytime a WWE announcer starts putting over how great the tag team division is...you know there's only like three teams left on the whole roster.
Black Lushus Posted October 6, 2006 Report Posted October 6, 2006 I was watching GAB 06 yesterday on OnDemand and it was funny to hear Cole explain why the crowd was chanting boring during the Finlay/Regal match "The crowd was expecting Bobby Lashley!" "you know, it actually sounds like they're chanting Bobby!" no Cole, they are bored with this matchup...sorry
CanadianGuitarist Posted October 6, 2006 Report Posted October 6, 2006 I realise this question's about three months behind now...but a Finlay Regal match was boring?
Black Lushus Posted October 6, 2006 Report Posted October 6, 2006 the WWE crowds don't want a Finlay/Regal 15 minute wrestling clinic...Cole was right, they wanted to see Bobby Lashely. Personally, I enjoyed the match, it was very old school, but that shit doesn't fly with the WWE type of crowd. Well maybe it would fly in Chicago, New York, Philly or Toronto, but not wherever the hell they were for that event.
bob_barron Posted October 6, 2006 Report Posted October 6, 2006 I loved Regal v. Finlay. Of course I'm biased as hell, but still. The show was in Indianapolis
Jericholic82 Posted October 6, 2006 Report Posted October 6, 2006 another big problem with regal-finlay despite the mat wrestling aspect was that it was 2 heels in there so they had no one to get behind and they hated both of them.
alfdogg Posted October 6, 2006 Report Posted October 6, 2006 I don't think that's really an excuse if the match is boring. If the action's hot, they'll get into it no matter who's in there.
Black Lushus Posted October 6, 2006 Report Posted October 6, 2006 it was a good match, but it wasn't THAT kinda match. An 8 minute match on Smackdown, sure, but not a 15 minute PPV match....not those two.
