Tonight's SD episode inspired me to inquire about this. What are some examples of announcers shamelessly protecting kayfabe?

Besides Jimmy Yang never having a match on SD...

They did the "newcomer" thing for Harley Race, even though he was a multi-time champion.

Everytime the crowd is silent "because they're in shock".

Crowd being half and half at Wrestlemania 18.

The kids are loving the Gobbledy Gooker.

When your hear wrestlers calling spots, but they're really "talking trash" to each other.

I remember once during a Kane/Snitsky match, Lawler said something like "these fans are really loving this match" while in the background you can CLEARLY see the crowd doing the wave. I thought that was pretty funny.

Announcers acting like they didn't know who Steamboat was during his run in the WWF in the early 90s, just a few years after being the IC champion, stealing the show with Savage at WM III. Hundreds of other examples, just anytime an announcer "forgets" something.

The WWE claiming they moved WM7 indoors to the LA Sports Arena to "protect" Sgt. Slaughter from anti-Iraq threats when in reality they couldn't sell out the Coliseum.

I remember when Matt Morgan came back with the stuttering gimmick, and they acted like he had never been in WWE before, despite being in a WRESTLEMANIA match

Matt Morgan was never in a WrestleMania match.

My bad....I could've sworn he was in the Taker handicap match at 19. At the very least he was there, on Smackdown no less....and he was in Survivor Series, sorry.

Similar to calling jobbers "youngsters", when Carlos Colon appeared at the Royal Rumble one year Gorilla Monsoon called him a "youngster" even though he was well over 40.

I also remember laughing my ass off at an early episode of Monday Night Raw when Rob Bartlett asked Vince McMahon "Who's this guy wrestling Shawn Michaels? Some guy they dragged off the street?" and Vince had to stammer and say something like "He's a young man who's enjoyed a bit of success here in the WWF," or something like that, referring to a jobber HBK was squashing.

To be fair, this was Monsoon saying this in the early 90s.

At that point, Moses was a youngster to him.

[Ok, an exagguration...but you know what I mean.]

On the lines of young wrestlers, I was watching a show from 2000, and JR called Benoit and Jericho "youngsters with bright futures ahead of them." Never mind they had each been wrestling for 10 years or more by then.

Along those lines...announcers from previous organizations that have amnesia when they came to the WWF/E. A prime example...Rod Trongard in the late '80s (former AWA announcer) saying on an episode of Prime Time Wrestling, "I have never seen the Rockers".

Jericho, I can forgive. Sure, he had been wrestling for a while at that point, but he has an extremely young looking face for his age. Benoit though? Dude doesn't even look young.

I was watching GAB 06 yesterday on OnDemand and it was funny to hear Cole explain why the crowd was chanting boring during the Finlay/Regal match

"The crowd was expecting Bobby Lashley!"

"you know, it actually sounds like they're chanting Bobby!"

no Cole, they are bored with this matchup...sorry

the WWE crowds don't want a Finlay/Regal 15 minute wrestling clinic...Cole was right, they wanted to see Bobby Lashely. Personally, I enjoyed the match, it was very old school, but that shit doesn't fly with the WWE type of crowd. Well maybe it would fly in Chicago, New York, Philly or Toronto, but not wherever the hell they were for that event.
