UseTheSledgehammerUh Posted September 13, 2004 Report Posted September 13, 2004 Hey, So I'm setting up a "Punk Rock" mixer tomorrow between my fraternity and a sorority. Everyone's dressin' up, etc, blah blah... Anyhoo, I need soundtracks for this party, but I'm not really familiar with a lot of the bands from the eras. I plan on creating 2 CDs, each with 80 minutes (or like 18-21 tracks) of Punk Music. Can you guys gimme lists of good music... Some stuff I want on there... The Clash Rancid The Ramones (not punk, but cover the rock?) Sex Pistols Anti-Flag So....a good 40 songs or so that are not only good but MAINSTREAM or known of that would get a good response would help. Thanks!!!
nl5xsk1 Posted September 13, 2004 Report Posted September 13, 2004 I'm kind of confused ... are you looking for us to recommend songs only by the bands that you listed? Or songs by bands that are comparable to the ones that you listed? Let me know what you're looking for, and I'm sure a bunch of us could help you out.

UseTheSledgehammerUh Posted September 13, 2004 Author Report Posted September 13, 2004 You guys fucking rule. No, not just the bands I listed. But a few songs from those bands.
Special K Posted September 13, 2004 Report Posted September 13, 2004 Bad Brains is sweet. Don't know enough to know which is their best album. They do some reggae too. I dunno if they're considered punk, but Bikini Kill did some pretty swell stuff.
DCMaximo Posted September 13, 2004 Report Posted September 13, 2004 A few others, prompted by other bands mentioned here: The Damned-"New Rose", "Smash It Up" Dead Kennedys-"Nazi Punks Fuck Off" The Ruts-"Babylon's Burning" The Stranglers-"No More Heroes" "Peaches" "(Get A) Grip (On Yourself)"
nl5xsk1 Posted September 13, 2004 Report Posted September 13, 2004 Dead Kennedys: Add "Holiday in Cambodia" to the ones referenced earlier. Sex Pistols: "New York" or "Revolution in the Classroom" are both pretty poppy and 'mainstream-friendly'. Black Flag: "TV Party", while not anywhere near their best work, is the most 'mainstream-friendly' and thus would go over better than a lot of their better songs. Descendents: "Der Wienershnitzel" was in the Pump Up the Volume (the Christian Slater is a DJ movie) so that might be recognizable. The Clash: You might want to go for their barely-punk-but-well-known songs like "Should I Stay or Should I Go" or "Rock the Casbah".
B. Brian Brunzell Posted September 13, 2004 Report Posted September 13, 2004 Rancid Timebomb Ruby Soho Roots Radical Throw in "Nihilism" and "Sidekick" and you're gold. Bad Religion: "Generator" "The Answer" "I Want to Conquer the World" "Fuck Armageddon, This is Hell" "You Are the Government" "Modern Man" "Against the Grain" The Clash: "I'm So Bored with the USA" "Tommy Gun" "Clampdown" "The Guns of Brixton" Social Distortion: "Prison Bound" "So Far Away" "Cold Feelings" "Through These Eyes"
the max Posted September 13, 2004 Report Posted September 13, 2004 Avril La-- I kid, I kid. The Vandals - Kill My Tenant, Look What I Almost Stepped In (Also, they have one of the funniest album titles I've ever seen with "Hitler Bad, Vandals Good" Also, for a real party starter, toss in "I Kill Childen" by the Dead Kennedy's.

rising up out of the back seat-nuh Posted September 14, 2004 Report Posted September 14, 2004 New York Dolls: Personality Crisis
Corey_Lazarus Posted September 14, 2004 Report Posted September 14, 2004 Offspring: "Heaven Is So Far Away" "Come Out And Play" "Genocide" "Nitro" "Self Esteem" "The Kids Aren't Alright" Chin Strap: "Giant Vagina That Ate Boston" Dickies: "Killer Klowns From Outer Space" "Toxic Avenger" Dropkick Murphys: "Perfect Stranger" "10 Years Of Service" "Spicy McHaggis" "Tessie" (might as well, since it's their "big" song right now) Ghoul Squad: "Pogo Is Dead" Misfits: "Descending Angel" "Dig Up Her Bones" "Scream!" "Saturday Night" "Donna" "Great Balls Of Fire" "Monster Mash"
The Metal Maniac Posted September 14, 2004 Report Posted September 14, 2004 Offspring: "Heaven Is So Far Away" You mean "Gone Away"?
Corey_Lazarus Posted September 14, 2004 Report Posted September 14, 2004 Maybe. I always forget the title of the song. I just know that's the chorus line (And I feel / And I feel that / Heaven is so far away). At least I didn't put down "Gotta Get Away," as I never understood the love for that song.
PLAGIARISM! Posted September 15, 2004 Report Posted September 15, 2004 Wire - 'Ex lion Tamer' and everything else.
Guest Temet Posted September 15, 2004 Report Posted September 15, 2004 Where's the love for The Clash's "Tommy Gun"?
JangoFett4Hire Posted September 16, 2004 Report Posted September 16, 2004 Don't get any Offspring. They're closer to hair metal than punk, I think. If it's a Greek mixer- Gang Green- Alcohol DK- Too Drunk to Fuck Meatmen- Glad I'm not a Girl Black Flag- Six Pack Buzzcocks- Orgasm Addict some other fun punk gems Adverts- Gary Gilmore's Eyes Bad Brains- Rock for Light Agent Orange- Bloodstains Exploited- I Believe in Anarchy Gorilla Biscuits- Biscuit Power any Ramones in honor of Johnny UK Subs- I Live in a Car try to stay away from straight edge bands (ie Minor Threat, SSD) because they'll make you feel guilty for getting drunk and trying to get in the Gamma Phi Betas pants. Also, avoid any super political bands (CRASS, most DK, Reagan Youth) because that will be a bummer. And, at the end of the night, when only the freaky sorority chicks remain, toss in some GG Allin!
UseTheSledgehammerUh Posted September 16, 2004 Author Report Posted September 16, 2004 HEY! Thanks to everyone for your help...I have a ton of funny pics from the "Punk" mixer...plus I'll post the final track listings I used for the 2 CDs...
Corey_Lazarus Posted September 17, 2004 Report Posted September 17, 2004 Don't get any Offspring. They're closer to hair metal than punk, I think. You can say that about a lot of punk bands, though. Considering hair metal was about simplistic party riffs and the image more than the music itself, and a whole bunch of punk is just that...yeah. Also, look at The Dickies. A lot of their stuff could be considered hair metal, but for some reason, they're called punk. But yeah. Don't listen to this man. Be glad you got some Offspring, if you did, because chances are everybody would have heard the song and know a lot of the words already.
Guest The Winter Of My Discontent Posted September 17, 2004 Report Posted September 17, 2004 I hope everyone who contributed to this thread is ashamed of themselves after seeing those pictures....
Corey_Lazarus Posted September 17, 2004 Report Posted September 17, 2004 Nah. I'd be more ashamed of myself if I saw them wearing Atreyu and Avenged Sevenfold shirts, personally. Especially if said Atreyu/A7X fans were holding signs that said "EMO SUCKS." ...or am I the only one that gets the joke?
