Okay...so its a genuine assumption...Americans hate Oasis....the Brits love Oasis for saving British guitar music...and being what is typically viewed as British.

 

But what I'm asking is do the Brits really love/worship Oasis as much as they make out or do the Americans dislike/hate Oasis as much as they make out.

 

My personal opinion is they came along at the right time in Britain...the whole music scene was dance music and any form of basic guitar music did not exist...I think if they happened to come along now in Britain they would not begin to be anywhere near as famous as they became...they just happened to strike lucky with their timing. However, my friend persistantly tells me that they're the greatest band Britain has ever produced...

Their first two albums are perfectly acceptable if mostly unremarkable, and the singles are very memorable, though they're more colored by nostalgia than they are actual quality. As for British rock bands of the 90s, Pulp smokes Oasis in every way conceivable.

Ya the "D'you know what I mean?" video was shit, the song isn't very good either. You're right I think Oasis fell off hard in America after that.

 

I personally like Oasis, a lot. I thought "Heathen Chemistry" was a pretty decent album. I have their new one, "Don't Believe the Truth" on my comp, but have yet to give it a good listen.

I think a lot of people in the UK look on them as a band past their time. While they still sell loads of albums over here, the hysteria that met Be Here Now on release (before everyone realised how average it was) has faded, probably due to an increasingly poor set of albums. They seem to survive mainly on nostalgia and the hope that Noel Gallagher will one day write some good songs again

They still top the charts in Australia, albeit for about a month or so before fading away again.

 

I absolutely adore Oasis, and have so since their first album. Probably my second favourite band behind the obvious.

 

Their new album is pretty decent. All the songs are great, but none stand-out like on, say, Morning Glory.

I think Oasis were really good but they seem to have lost the spark somewhere along the way. I mean, the first two albums they released are great but then you had "Be Here Now" and "Standing on the Shoulder of Giants" which were crap. "Heathen Chemistry" was a decent album and some of the stuff I've heard from the lastest album isn't bad. That said "Lyla" is fucking crap. They did come along at the right time but I think there time is up.

 

However, I'm with Edwin when he says Pulp smoke Oasis.

I thought Oasis ceased to exist after 1997. Every time I hear their name come up in recent times I'm surprised to hear they're still around. As for the band itself, "Champagne Supernova" is one of the most annoying songs of all time... that's all I can say.

Damnit, I like Be Here Now, no matter what anyone, or everyone, else thinks.

 

Everything after that is relativly worthless though. They've got to the stage over here where everyone buys the albums because it's "Oasis", rather than because they're any good. I do look forward to the day when Noel goes solo though, God willing it happens anyway, as I've a feeling that he'd be better off not trying to write "Oasis" songs, if that makes any sense.

Noel himself has actually said that the Be Here Now album was full of songs that didn't actually make the first two albums..he just basically released it to make even more money. More fool the people that actually bought it !

 

Edit - My younger Brother actually posted this topic when I was away on Holiday, but I'm glad he did. I personally consider Oasis one of the greatest bands of all time...
