LivingLegendGaryColeman 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2006 Well, I know we talked Iron Man stuff before, but I started a new thread because the actor has been named. Robert Downey Jr. will be playing Tony Stark and Iron Man. Credit: SuperHeroHype.com Ain't It Cool News reports that Robert Downey Jr. has been cast to play Iron Man for director Jon Favreau at Marvel Studios! The movie will be distributed by Paramount Pictures on May 2, 2008. Based upon Marvel's iconic Super Hero, the film will follow billionaire weapons-manufacturer, Tony Stark (Downey Jr.), who confronts the sins of his past after he is injured by one of his own weapons. Equipped with a high-tech suit of armor, he becomes Iron Man to combat evil on a global scale. Arthur Marcum and Matt Holloway wrote the film's screenplay. 2GOLD 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2006 Robert can be hit or miss but he's damn sure not Tony Stark. I might buy Coolio more than Robert Downey Jr. Hell, I'd have bought Thomas Gibson quicker than Robery Downey Jr.
In Credible 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2006 They should just use Bert Reynolds. Or Tom Sellick.
Ted the Poster 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2006 I think Downey can pull it off, provided this isn't the alcoholic version of Stark from the Ultimate universe.
tommytomlin 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2006 Wouldn't Downey be better at pulling off a character with a substance abuse problem?
pochorenella 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2006 Weird choice IMO. The guy's a fine actor when he puts his mind to it, hopefully he can pull off the role of Tony Stark. BTW, I saw some of the rejected armor models they were developing and they looked fine so they might be on the right track at least armor-wise.
starvenger 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2006 I think Downey can pull it off, provided this isn't the alcoholic version of Stark from the Ultimate universe. Oh, I see, so you want the recovering alcoholic version of Stark from 616 Marvel?
Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2006 I never pictured Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne and that worked out perfectly well.
2GOLD 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2006 I never pictured Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne and that worked out perfectly well. You kidding? Keaton always had the look of a guy who could play an asshole and Bruce Wayne was an asshole. The one plus is Downey was very good in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2006 Keaton pulls off psycho well, not so much asshole...don't get the two confused.
2GOLD 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2006 Keaton pulls off psycho well, not so much asshole...don't get the two confused. Good point. Lets just hope Robert doesn't have another one of his hiccups and delay filming.
Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2006 so they couldn't go with the "Stark is critically injured and creates the suit to survive" storyline?
pochorenella 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2006 so they couldn't go with the "Stark is critically injured and creates the suit to survive" storyline? I think they might do a variation of it at least... Based upon Marvel's iconic Super Hero, the film will follow billionaire weapons-manufacturer, Tony Stark (Downey Jr.), who confronts the sins of his past after he is injured by one of his own weapons. bobobrazil1984 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2006 Robert Downey Jr is an underrated actor. He's really good.
Special K 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2006 ^Indeed. And I can see him pulling off an alcoholic playboy. I'm just glad they didn't cast some 25-year-old.
Mecha Mummy 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2006 Downey was also one of the big highlights of A Scanner Darkly, though he was playing a character there that's world's away from the kind of character Tony Stark is. I'm cautiously optimistic, actually.
Lt. Al Giardello 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2006 I'm giving him a chance as Tony Starks, I think he'll pull it off. Does anyone know if Terrence Howard will be cast as War Machine? I heard that rumor awhile ago.
Sideburnious 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2006 I like R.D Jr but as Iron Man? I'd probably rather see Val Kilmer as Tony, maybe even someone like Brad Pitt.
Vampiro69 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2006 This is not as bad a choice as it could have been. We could have been stuck with a stiff like Ashton Kutchor.
Special K 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2006 Cary Elwes pre-'Saw'-puffiness is clearly the best choice.
dubq 0 Report post Posted September 30, 2006 Interesting choice. I guess that whole "I'm going to cast a virtual unknown" thing from Favreau was bait and switch. Either way I can totally see this. Not sure if he should have a moustache now, or not. EDIT: Actually, I coud totally see him pulling off Stark with facial hair, now: http://www.imdb.com/gallery/granitz/4139/E...20Jr.,%20Robert

Ripper 0 Report post Posted September 30, 2006 Why is robert downey jr so underrated anyway. I mean seriously, even if the movie is pure shit, he usually does his fucking thing. I mean jesus, he did a great job in Black and White and that was the worse fucking movie I have seen in a long time. Plus, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is the shit. LESS THAN ZERO MUTHAFUCKERS, LESS THAN MUTHA FUCKING ZERO. Of course he can pull it off. The guy is an real ACTOR!!
