Slingshot Suplex Posted October 4, 2004 Report Posted October 4, 2004 Jewel "You Were Meant For Me" But not the redone sterilized radio version. The first version that I heard that sounded more raw and passionate. And what's the name of that song that , I believe, Pearl Jam covered about the guy's girl dying in a car crash. When I was younger, the original version made me think "man, that's a depressing song"
B. Brian Brunzell Posted October 4, 2004 Report Posted October 4, 2004 And what's the name of that song that , I believe, Pearl Jam covered about the guy's girl dying in a car crash. When I was younger, the original version made me think "man, that's a depressing song" That would be "Last Kiss." I can't remember who originally did the song though.

Styles Posted October 5, 2004 Report Posted October 5, 2004 Mama Said by Metallica is a really sad and emotional song. It gets me every time I listen to it, which is rarely, for that reason...
Guest GreatOne Posted October 5, 2004 Report Posted October 5, 2004 Tori Amos' version of Raining Blood, though not for the same reason.....................
Guest BrokenWings Posted October 5, 2004 Report Posted October 5, 2004 Mostly anything by Elliot Smith really. We have a winner.
Anorak Posted October 5, 2004 Report Posted October 5, 2004 His stuff can't help but sound even sadder since he passed away. Too many songs to list. Anything by Red House Painters, American Music Club or Richmond Fontaine qualifies in my mind.
Guest The Decadent Slacker Posted October 5, 2004 Report Posted October 5, 2004 I also go with Cash's "Hurt." Also: "Me And A Gun"-Tori Amos "Brooklyn Kids"-Pete Townshend "My Mummy's Dead"-John Lennon "Who Wants To Live Forever?"-Queen
Special K Posted October 5, 2004 Report Posted October 5, 2004 I'm so lonesome I could cry - Hank Williams Buenos Tardes Amigo - ween.
Guest PlatinumBoy Posted October 5, 2004 Report Posted October 5, 2004 According to Allmusic, Last Kiss was written by Wayne Cochran. And as for Hurt--I totally agree, and I'll get to the part that gets me the most, espically if watching the video. At the end of the verse "You are someone else, I am still right here..." the song goes from just basically the guitar and Cash singing to adding in the backing piano/organ. Then the chorus..... but by God when Cash gets to "goes away in the end....." and more instruments join in, and then his voice just quivers and makes you feel the pain as he continues "...and you can have it all, my empire of dirt." Then the instruments become even louder at "If I could start again, a million miles away...." and Cash's voice just sounds so strained and weak and painful. You really get the feeling that he means this. That he truly is filled with regret and pain. The way the piano/organ (sounds like an organ but I could be wrong) just builds through that part makes it heart-wrenching. Also, if you are watching the video, this part with the montage of Cash sitting there clenched up old and the shots of Johnny throughout time--I've honestly seen it make many people cry. Also for Cash, I'll openly admit that once when I lost a loved one, I heard the news and immediately went home and turned on Meet me in Heaven by Cash from Unchained and cried like a baby. Even now it affects me when I hear it.
SamoaRowe Posted October 5, 2004 Report Posted October 5, 2004 "Brick" - Ben Folds Five "Fred Jones Pt. 2" - Ben Folds "Hey Jupiter" - Tori Amos "When You're Gone" - The Cranberries Argh, can't think of any others at the moment.

Giuseppe Zangara Posted October 6, 2004 Report Posted October 6, 2004 His stuff can't help but sound even sadder since he passed away. A lot of his songs really aren't that sad, though. Dude's lyrics were more angry than depressed.
Anorak Posted October 6, 2004 Report Posted October 6, 2004 He wasn't exactly the saddest lyrically but his voice seemed to carry a sadness most of the time to my ears. The mood seemed weary and resigned a lot of the time. Matthew Sweet - Nothing Lasts. A great closing track.
The Man in Blak Posted October 6, 2004 Report Posted October 6, 2004 "Hurt" is pretty weighty, but the video absolutely pushes it to the top of the heap. The old footage, the sight of Cash at the piano...there's just a lot of powerful imagery. But don't forget - it lost at the VMAs to Missy Elliott. Outside of Johnny Cash, I think I'd pick Tom Waits' "Soldier's Things."

Giuseppe Zangara Posted October 10, 2004 Report Posted October 10, 2004 I'd believe it if he were a girl. And even then, 17, tops.
Guest Phenom Posted October 10, 2004 Report Posted October 10, 2004 Fountains of Wayne - Stacy's Mom If that's sad, I'd hate to hear downright depressing.
